Method
Prepare roll and condiments
Slice and toast (optional)
Using a serrated knife, split the hero roll lengthwise, leaving a small hinge if desired. If you prefer a warm, slightly crisp sandwich, spread the softened butter evenly on the cut sides and place cut-side-down in a skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes until golden and lightly crisp. Remove and set aside.
In a small bowl combine mayonnaise, yellow mustard, olive oil, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning; this will be the sandwich dressing.
Assemble sandwich
Spread roughly half of the dressing on the bottom half of the roll and the remaining half on the top half so the flavors are distributed.
Layer the meats on the bottom half in this order for balance: place the 4 oz sliced roast beef first (evenly across the length), then top with 4 oz sliced turkey breast, and finish with 3 oz sliced ham. Overlap slices slightly so each bite includes all three meats.
Place the 2 slices of cheddar cheese over the ham, distributing them so they cover the length of the sandwich. If using additional provolone or extra cheddar, add it on top of or beneath the cheddar as preferred.
Add the 'works' vegetables: arrange shredded lettuce over the cheese, then add tomato slices in a single layer, followed by thin red onion slices, pepperoncini rings, and dill pickle slices. Distribute evenly so each portion of sandwich contains a mix of vegetables.
If you toasted the roll and want the cheese slightly melted, place the assembled open sandwich under a preheated broiler for 30–60 seconds — watch carefully — until cheese softens. Alternatively, place the assembled open sandwich in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 3–4 minutes.
Close the sandwich, press lightly to compact, and slice into serving portions (typically cut in half or thirds depending on roll length). If desired, secure with sandwich picks.
Serve
Serve immediately with extra pickle spears or chips on the side. If not eating right away, wrap tightly in parchment or plastic wrap to keep the sandwich together and refrigerate for up to 24 hours (best eaten the same day).
