1

Chill glass

Place a martini (cocktail) glass in the freezer for at least 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold and preserves crema.

2

Prepare espresso

Brew 1 oz of fresh espresso and let it rest for about 20–30 seconds so it's very hot but not steaming; alternatively use 1 oz of well-chilled strong cold brew concentrate if you prefer a cooler start. Fresh hot espresso will help create a good crema when shaken with ice.

3

Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz vodka, 0.75 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup.

4

Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice (roughly 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. The vigorous shaking chills the mixture quickly and creates a frothy crema on top from the espresso.

5

Strain

Dump the ice or ice water from the chilled glass. Double strain the cocktail into the chilled martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or the shaker lid) to catch small ice shards and ensure a smooth surface with crema.

6

Garnish and serve

Garnish with three whole coffee beans arranged on the crema. Serve immediately.
