Classic Highball

Method

Classic Highball

1

Prepare glass

Select a tall highball or Collins glass. Fill the glass with 4–6 large ice cubes to chill the glass and slow dilution.

2

Add spirit

Measure and pour 2 oz of whisky over the ice.

3

Top with soda

Gently pour 4 oz chilled soda water down the side of the glass or over the back of a bar spoon to preserve carbonation. Do not stir vigorously.

4

Optional aromatics

If desired, add 1 dash of bitters to the top for added depth or express a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in for aroma.

5

Serve

Give the drink one gentle stir (1–2 rotations) to integrate spirit and soda. Serve immediately with a straw or without.

Ginger Highball (variation)

6

Fill a highball glass with 4–6 large ice cubes.

7

Pour 2 oz whisky or bourbon over the ice.

8

Top with 4 oz chilled ginger ale, pouring gently to keep fizz.

9

Garnish with a lime wedge; optionally squeeze the wedge into the drink for extra brightness and drop it in.

10

Give a single gentle stir to combine and serve immediately.

Citrus Highball (variation)

11

Fill a highball glass with 4–6 large ice cubes.

12

Add 2 oz vodka or light rum and 0.5 oz fresh lemon or lime juice.

13

Top with 4 oz chilled club soda or lemon-lime soda. Pour slowly to maintain carbonation.

14

Garnish with a thin citrus wheel or wedge and give one gentle stir. Serve immediately.
