Method
Espresso
Dose and Tamp
Weigh 18 g of freshly roasted coffee and grind to a fine, espresso grind. Distribute evenly in the portafilter and tamp with steady pressure until the bed is level and compact.
Brew
Lock the portafilter into a warmed espresso machine group head. Start extraction and brew approximately 36 ml of espresso (double shot) in about 25–30 seconds. Adjust grind or dose if extraction time is significantly different.
Hot Water
Preheat Cup
Preheat a 200–250 ml cup or glass by rinsing with hot water. Discard the rinse water.
Add Hot Water (Long Black vs Americano)
For a Long Black: pour about 120 ml of hot water into the preheated cup first, then gently pour the freshly brewed 36 ml espresso over the hot water to preserve the crema. For an Americano: pour the 36 ml espresso into the cup first, then add 120 ml hot water on top. Either method yields a similar strength; Long Black preserves more crema.
