Method

Burger Patties

  1. 1

    Mix and form patties

In a medium bowl combine 1 lb lean ground turkey, 1 tbsp fine breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 3 tsp kosher salt, and 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a fork until just combined — avoid overmixing to keep patties tender. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each) and form into patties about 3/4-inch thick, pressing a shallow dimple into the center of each to prevent bulging while cooking.

  2. 2

    Cook patties

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add 1 tbsp olive oil, swirling to coat. When hot, place the patties in the pan without crowding (cook in batches if needed). Cook 4–5 minutes on the first side until the underside is golden and releases easily. Flip and cook another 3–4 minutes. During the last 1 minute of cooking, place 1 slice of American cheese on each patty and cover the pan with a lid or tent with foil to melt the cheese and finish cooking until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Remove patties to a plate and let rest 2 minutes.

Toppings & Buns

  1. 3

    Prepare buns and vegetables

While patties cook, slice the tomato into 1/4-inch thick rounds (about 3–4 slices from 1 tomato). Rinse and dry 4 lettuce leaves. Spread 1 tsp mayonnaise on the cut side of each bun half. If you prefer toasted buns, place the buns cut-side down on the skillet for 30–60 seconds until lightly browned.

  2. 4

    Assemble burgers

Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, top with a slice or two of tomato, then place the hot turkey patty with melted American cheese on top. Add optional pickles and mustard if using. Finish with the top bun and serve immediately.

Optional (serving)

  1. 5

Serve the burgers hot with your choice of sides (fries, salad). Offer extra mayo, mustard, or ketchup on the side.
