Tea Base

Method

Prepare and Boil

1

Heat water

Pour 2 cups of cold, fresh water into a teapot or small saucepan. Place over high heat and bring to a rolling boil (about 2–4 minutes depending on stove).

2

Warm cup (optional)

While water heats, pour a little boiling water into your teacup, swirl, then discard. This keeps the brewed tea hot longer.

Steep Tea

3

Add tea

If using loose leaf tea, add 2 tsp of tea leaves to an infuser or directly to the teapot. If using tea bags, add 1–2 tea bags (use 1 bag for lighter, 2 for stronger).

4

Pour boiling water

Pour the just-boiled water over the tea leaves or tea bag(s) in the teapot or cup.

5

Steep

Let the tea steep for 3–5 minutes: 3 minutes for a lighter brew, 4 for typical strength, and 5 for a robust cup. Cover the teapot or cup to retain heat while steeping.

6

Remove leaves

Remove the tea bags or strain out loose leaves promptly after the chosen steep time to avoid bitterness.

Finish and Serve

7

Add milk and sweetener (optional)

If desired, stir in 1 tablespoon of milk and 1 teaspoon of sweetener (adjust to taste). Add milk after removing the tea leaves to prevent curdling and to judge color/strength.

8

Add lemon or mint (optional)

For a lemon tea, squeeze a wedge and drop the slice into the cup. For mint, gently bruise 2 mint leaves and add to the cup. Note: do not add milk if using lemon (it may curdle).

9

Give the tea a final gentle stir, taste and adjust sweetness or milk as needed. Serve immediately in a warmed cup.
