Method
Sandwich
Prepare bread
Spread 1 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter evenly on the outside face of each slice of bread. If you prefer a garlic flavor, lightly sprinkle 1/8 tsp garlic powder over the buttered sides.
Assemble cheese
On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread 1 tablespoon cream cheese (optional) to help hold shredded cheese. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar evenly, making sure cheese reaches close to the edges but leaves a small border. Top cheddar with the single slice of American cheese for extra meltiness. Lightly season the exposed cheese with 1/4 tsp black pepper.
Close and heat
Place the second slice of bread buttered-side-up on top to form the sandwich. Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low (around 300–325°F / 150–160°C). Place sandwich in the skillet and cook 3–4 minutes on the first side, pressing gently with a spatula or a heavy pan to encourage even contact and melting. Reduce heat if the bread is browning too quickly before cheese melts.
Flip and finish
Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the second side 2–4 minutes more until golden-brown and the cheese is fully melted and gooey. If needed for faster, even melting, cover the skillet with a lid for 1–2 minutes after flipping to trap heat.
Rest and slice
Transfer sandwich to a cutting board and let rest 30–60 seconds to allow cheese to set slightly. Slice sandwich diagonally or down the middle with a sharp knife. Serve immediately.
Accompaniments
Side salad (if chosen)
Toss 1 cup mixed greens with 1 tablespoon vinaigrette or dressing of choice just before serving and place alongside the sandwich.
Fries or chips (if chosen)
If using store-bought fries, bake or fry according to package directions until crispy and season with salt. For potato chips, place a 1-cup serving on the plate.
Dessert selection
Offer either 1 freshly baked chocolate chip cookie or 1 wagon wheel cookie on the plate as the included dessert.
