Method

Form patty
Gently shape the 0.25-lb portion of sirloin into a patty about 3.5" (9 cm) wide and roughly 1/2" (1.3 cm) thick. Avoid overworking the meat to keep the burger tender. Make a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to reduce puffing while cooking.
Season
Season both sides of the patty with the fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Press the seasoning lightly into the meat so it adheres.
Cook patty
Increase heat to medium-high. Add a small drop of neutral oil if your pan is dry. Place the patty in the hot skillet. Cook for about 2.5–3 minutes on the first side without pressing (for a small kids patty) until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook 2–2.5 minutes on the second side for medium doneness (internal temp about 160°F/71°C recommended for ground beef). If adding cheese, place the slice on the patty 30–45 seconds before removing from the pan and cover loosely to melt.
Assemble
Spread ketchup and mustard on the inside of the top bun (or mayo if preferred). On the bottom bun, place the lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and the cooked patty (cheese-side up if used). Top with dill pickle slices and place the toasted top bun. Cut the burger in half if desired for easier eating.
Choice of Side (prepare one)
Oven fries (if chosen)
If using frozen oven-ready fries, preheat oven and cook according to package instructions (typically 425°F/220°C for 15–20 minutes). Toss fries halfway through for even browning. Portion approximately 3/4 cup per kid.
Fresh apple slices (if chosen)
Core and thinly slice a fresh apple into bite-sized wedges. If desired, toss with a few drops of lemon juice to prevent browning. Serve approximately 1/2 cup.
Dessert
Offer either a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie or a wagon wheel. If the cookie is baked fresh, warm it for 6–8 minutes at 300°F (150°C) or 8–10 seconds in a microwave if preferred, then let cool 30 seconds before serving. Place the chosen dessert on the plate next to the burger and side.
Plating & serving
Place the assembled burger on a kids-sized plate. Add the chosen side portion and the dessert. Include a small napkin and child-appropriate cutlery. Serve immediately while the burger is warm.
