Coffee Basics

Optional Additions (per serving)

Method

Coffee Basics

1

Measure beans

Weigh out 30 grams (0.03 kg) of fresh whole coffee beans for a single strong 12–16 fl oz (350–500 ml) pot. For a single 8 fl oz (240 ml) cup, use about 15–18 g. Adjust ratio to taste: a common starting ratio is 1:15 (coffee:water by weight).

2

Heat water

Pour 100 ml of filtered water into the kettle and bring to a boil briefly to warm the kettle and any brewing vessel. Discard the warming water. Then heat the remaining 500 ml filtered water to 92–96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, heat until just off a rolling boil (about 30 seconds after boiling).

3

Grind beans

Grind the measured coffee to the grind size appropriate for your brew method: coarse for French press, medium-coarse for pour-over, medium for drip, fine for Aeropress (depending on recipe). Grind immediately before brewing for best flavor.

4

Bloom (for pour-over/French press/Aeropress where applicable)

Place ground coffee in your brewer. Pour a small amount of hot water (about twice the weight of coffee, e.g., 60 g water for 30 g coffee) to saturate the grounds evenly. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2 and improve extraction.

5

Continue pouring / brewing

For pour-over: After bloom, pour the rest of the hot water slowly in concentric circles, finishing within 2:30–3:30 minutes total brew time. For French press: pour all hot water, stir gently, place the lid and let steep 3:30–4:30 minutes, then press slowly. For drip brewer: start brew and allow machine to complete cycle. For Aeropress: follow specific Aeropress recipe (inverted or standard) with total contact time ~1–2 minutes depending on desired strength.

6

Serve

Once brewed, pour coffee immediately into cups to avoid overextraction from grounds left in contact with liquid. Taste and adjust strength on future brews by changing coffee dose or grind size.

Optional Additions (per serving)

7

Milk: Steam or heat 1/8 cup (about 30 ml) of milk if you want a latte-style drink. For a flat white or smaller milk-forward drink use less. Add milk to brewed coffee to taste.

8

Sweetener: Add 1 tsp sugar (or sweetener to taste) and stir until dissolved.

9

Iced option: If making iced coffee, pour brewed coffee over a glass filled with ice and optionally add 1/8 cup cold water or milk to adjust strength. Serve immediately.

Cleanup

10

Discard spent grounds or compost them. Rinse and wash grinder, brewer, and kettle after they cool. Wipe any spills and store equipment dry.
