Sandwich

Optional add-ins

Method

Prep

1

Bring ingredients together

Gather bread, ham, cheese, butter, mayonnaise, mustard and any optional add-ins. If using tomato, wash and slice into 2 even slices.

2

Lightly spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread and mustard on the other slice, covering most of the surface but leaving a small border to prevent squeeze-out.

Assemble sandwich

3

Place the slice of cheese on top of the mayonnaise-coated bread slice so the cheese will sit between ham and bread.

4

Lay the 2 slices of ham evenly on top of the cheese, slightly overlapping if needed to cover the cheese.

5

Add any optional add-ins now: place the lettuce leaf directly on the ham, then tomato slices and pickles if using. Sprinkle a little black pepper over the tomato if desired.

6

Close the sandwich by placing the mustard-coated bread slice on top, mustard side down.

Finish

7

If serving cold: press gently, cut sandwich diagonally or down the middle, and serve immediately.

8

If serving toasted/grilled: spread the outer faces of both bread slices with the 1 tsp butter (split between them). Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place sandwich in skillet and grill 2–3 minutes until golden brown, then flip and grill another 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is melted. Remove and let rest 1 minute before cutting.
