Method
Brew
Measure and grind
Weigh 20 g of whole coffee beans (standard medium-strength for a 12 oz cup). Grind to a medium-coarse grind if using a pour-over or drip brewer, or medium-fine for automatic drip with flat filters. Aim for a consistency similar to granulated sugar for balanced extraction.
Heat water
Heat 300 ml of filtered water to 92–96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.
Preheat brewer and cup
Pour about 50 ml of the hot water through your brewer (dripper, French press, etc.) to rinse the filter and preheat the carafe or cup. Discard rinse water or use to warm the serving cup.
Bloom (pour-over or manual methods)
Place the ground coffee in the filter or basket. Start by pouring ~40–60 ml of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2 and promote even extraction.
Complete pour and brew
After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water in a steady spiral or pulses, keeping the water level consistent. Aim for a total brew time of 3 to 4 minutes for pour-over/drip methods. If using a French press, add grounds to the press, pour all 300 ml water, stir gently, steep for 4 minutes, then press down slowly.
Finish
Once the coffee has finished dripping or the French press has been pressed, transfer the brewed coffee to your preheated 12 oz (about 355 ml) mug or carafe. The brewed yield should be approximately 330–350 ml (12 oz) taking into account absorption by the grounds; adjust grind or dose slightly if yield differs.
Serve
Adjust strength and temperature
Taste the brewed coffee. If it's slightly stronger or hotter than desired, add up to 60 ml milk (steamed or warmed) to reach preferred strength and temperature. If it's too strong, add a splash of hot water to dilute carefully.
Sweeten and finish
Stir in sugar or sweetener to taste (start with 1 tsp). For a richer cup, add 1 tablespoon of cream or flavored syrup if desired. Stir gently and serve immediately.
