Method
Prepare glassware and ingredients
- 1
Chill the sake and beer in the refrigerator until cold (ideally 38–45°F / 3–7°C). Cold liquids produce the best flavor and the characteristic fizz when combined.
- 2
Select a standard shot glass and a pint glass (or beer mug) large enough to hold the beer with some headroom.
- 3
If using, cut a lime wedge and set next to the glass for garnish or a squeeze after the drop.
Assemble and serve the Sake Bomb
- 4
Fill the shot and beer glass
Pour 6 oz of cold sake into the shot glass. Pour 12 oz of chilled lager into the pint glass, leaving about 1/2 to 1 inch (1–2 cm) of headspace at the top so the beer will foam when the shot is dropped.
- 5
Set up for the 'bomb'
Place the shot glass gently on top of the pint glass rim, balanced across the rim so it sits securely but can be dropped into the beer when ready. Some people prefer to hold the pint with one hand and the shot with the other for the drop; choose the method you prefer.
- 6
Perform the drop
When everyone is ready, either slam the table once (traditional for group play) or simply drop the shot glass straight down into the beer. The impact will create a dramatic fizz and splash; be careful to avoid overfilling glasses and to keep a hand over the shot if you want to reduce splatter.
- 7
Immediately drink the combined mixture from the pint glass or drink quickly from the shot-glass-turned-submerged position, depending on local custom. If you like, squeeze the lime wedge into the beer once the shot has dropped to add a bright citrus note.
