Ice
Method
Prepare Glass
Chill and ready
Put a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you build the cocktail to chill it. If using ice water, discard it before serving.
Build & Stir
Measure and combine
In a mixing glass add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, and 0.25 oz maple syrup.
Add bitters and spice
Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and about 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg to the mixing glass. The nutmeg is a key aromatic — freshly grate it right before mixing for best flavor.
Finish & Garnish
Prep the glass and strain
If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump it now. Place a single large ice cube or sphere in the chilled rocks glass. Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the glass over the large ice to remove any nutmeg solids.
Express orange oils
Take the orange peel and hold it over the cocktail, skin-side down. Give it a firm twist to express the oils across the cocktail surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.
Garnish
Finish with one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick placed into the glass. Optionally grate a light dusting of fresh nutmeg on top for aroma.
