Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
Combine coffee and water
In a clean 1–2 liter (quart) container or jar, add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee. Pour 4 cups cold, filtered water over the grounds, making sure all grounds are wetted. Stir gently for about 10–15 seconds to ensure even saturation.
Steep
Cover the container (lid or plastic wrap) and let it steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16–20 hours. Room temperature will extract slightly faster; refrigeration yields a cleaner flavor. Do not agitate during steeping.
Strain
After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth, a coffee filter, or a nut-milk bag into a clean container. If needed, strain a second time through a fresh filter to remove remaining fines. Expect about 3 to 3 1/4 cups of cold brew concentrate.
Store
Seal the concentrate in an airtight container and refrigerate. It will keep well for up to 10 days; best within 5–7 days for optimal flavor.
To Serve (optional)
Sweeten and finish
If you want sweetened coffee, stir in simple syrup or preferred sweetener (about 1–2 tablespoons per 8 oz serving) so it dissolves easily. For a richer finish, add 1–2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half and stir gently.
Serve
Serve over ice immediately. Adjust dilution, sweetener, and dairy to taste.
