Kid's Burger

Method

Kid's Burger

1

Form the patty

Place 0.25 lb ground beef in a small bowl. Lightly sprinkle 0.25 tsp salt and 0.125 tsp pepper over the meat. Gently mix with your fingers just until combined (avoid overworking). Shape into a small, slightly flattened patty about 3.5–4 inches (9–10 cm) wide and roughly 1/2 inch thick; make a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb so it cooks evenly.

2

Toast the bun

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Spread 0.5 tbs softened butter on the cut sides of the bun. Place bun, buttered side down, in the skillet and toast 1–2 minutes until light golden. Remove and set aside.

3

Cook the patty

Increase skillet heat to medium-high and add 1 tsp neutral oil or spray lightly. Place the patty in the hot pan. Cook 2.5–3 minutes without moving until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook another 2–2.5 minutes for a medium-well kid-friendly doneness (internal temp about 160°F/71°C) — adjust time to reach safe temperature. In the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place the slice of cheddar on top so it melts slightly. Remove patty and let rest 1 minute.

4

Assemble

Spread 0.5 tsp mayonnaise on the bottom bun and 1 tsp ketchup on the top bun (or combine to taste). Place the lettuce leaf on the bottom bun (if using), add the patty with melted cheese, then top with the bun. Cut the assembled burger in half to make it easier for a child to handle.

5

Prepare the potato

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) if baking. Wash and scrub the potato; leave the skin on for texture and nutrients. Cut the half potato into 1/3-inch thick sticks (kid-friendly thickness). Immediately place fries in a bowl of cold water and soak 10 minutes to remove excess starch, then drain and pat very dry with paper towels.

6

Toss the dried fries with 1–2 tbs oil, 0.25 tsp salt, and 0.125 tsp paprika in a bowl until evenly coated. Arrange fries in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between pieces. Bake 18–22 minutes, flipping once at about 10 minutes, until golden and tender. Remove from oven and, while hot, taste and adjust with a small pinch more salt if needed.

7

Alternative: quick pan-fry

If you prefer quicker pan-cooked fries, heat a large skillet over medium-high and add 1–2 tbs oil. Add the cut and dried fries in a single layer (work in batches if necessary). Cook, turning occasionally, for 8–12 minutes until browned and cooked through. Season with 0.25 tsp salt and 0.125 tsp paprika while hot.

8

Serve

Place fries beside the cut burger halves. Provide a small ramekin of ketchup for dipping. Let the food cool slightly before serving to a child.
