For the Bloody Mix

Method

Rim & Prepare Glasses

1

Choose two large pint glasses or chilled beer mugs. Rub the rim of each glass with a lime wedge to moisten it.

2

On a small plate combine coarse sea salt (or Tajín) with chili powder if using. Press the moistened glass rims into the seasoning, twisting to coat evenly. Set glasses aside in the refrigerator or filled with ice to chill while you prepare the mix.

Make the Bloody Mix

3

In a medium mixing pitcher combine 2 cups tomato juice and (optional) 1/2 cup clamato if using. Stir to combine.

4

Add 2 tbsp fresh lime juice, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp soy sauce (or Maggi), 1 tsp hot sauce, 1 tsp celery salt and 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper to the pitcher. Whisk the mixture until the seasonings are fully incorporated. Taste and adjust — add extra hot sauce for heat, more lime for brightness, or a splash of olive brine for savory depth.

5

Cover and refrigerate the bloody mix for at least 10 minutes to let flavors meld. This can be made up to 24 hours ahead and kept chilled.

Assemble Each Michilada

6

Prepare the glass

Remove a chilled rimmed glass from the fridge. Add a few ice cubes if you prefer your michelada very cold (traditional michiladas may use little or no ice).

7

Build the drink

Pour about 4 to 6 ounces (1/2 to 3/4 cup) of the bloody mix into the prepared glass, depending on how tomato-forward you want the drink. Slowly tilt the glass and pour one 12-oz beer (or 8–10 oz if sharing) down the side so it mixes gently with the bloody mix without foaming over. Stir once gently with a bar spoon or straw to combine — avoid vigorous stirring to keep carbonation.

8

Finish and garnish

Garnish each michelada with a lime wheel on the rim, 1–2 large cocktail shrimp or prawn on a skewer, a cucumber spear, 2–3 pickled jalapeño slices, and 2–3 radish slices if using. Serve immediately with extra lime wedges and hot sauce on the side.

Variations & Notes

9

For a lighter version use more beer and less bloody mix (3:1 beer to mix). For a Clamato-style michelada use all Clamato instead of tomato juice. If you want a saltier, umami profile, increase Worcestershire or add 1 tsp olive brine. Adjust spice to taste and always taste the bloody mix before adding beer so you can correct seasoning.

10

To serve a pitcher-style michelada: multiply the bloody mix quantities by 4, whisk together, chill, then add 2–3 chilled 12-oz beers slowly to a pitcher and serve over ice in rimmed glasses.
