Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparing the Meatballs
- 1
Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, ground veal, whipped ricotta, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and chopped fresh basil. Mix everything together until fully combined, but do not overmix.
- 2
Form Meatballs
With your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place the formed meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 3
Chill
Refrigerate the meatballs for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during cooking.
Cooking the Marinara Sauce
- 4
Sauté Onion and Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and add salt, sugar, chopped fresh basil, and black pepper. Stir well to combine and let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes on low heat.
Cooking the Meatballs
- 6
Cook Meatballs
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the chilled meatballs in the simmering marinara sauce, cover, and let them cook for about 20-25 minutes, until they are cooked through and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C).
- 7
Serve
Once cooked, serve the meatballs in the marinara sauce, garnished with additional fresh basil if desired.
