Method

Cocktail

1

Prepare glass

Place a large old-fashioned glass on your work surface. If you prefer the drink slightly chilled without dilution, chill the glass in the freezer for a few minutes beforehand.

2

Add sugar and bitters

If using simple syrup, add 1/2 tsp to the glass. If using granulated sugar, place 1 tsp sugar in the glass, then add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar.

3

Muddle

Gently muddle the sugar and bitters together until the sugar is mostly dissolved and aromatic. If using simple syrup, just stir to combine with the bitters.

4

Add whisky and ice

Add 2 oz Crown Royal to the glass. Add one large ice cube (or several large cubes) to fill the glass about two-thirds. Stir gently for 20–30 seconds to chill and lightly dilute the drink.

5

Garnish and finish

Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray across the surface. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish. Optionally add a maraschino cherry or a small splash (about 1 tsp) of club soda if you prefer a touch of effervescence.

6

Serve immediately, with a short stirring spoon for occasional gentle stirring while sipping.
