Martini

Method

Martini

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to ensure it is well chilled.

2

Prepare mixing vessel

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with about 1 cup of fresh ice to properly chill and dilute the spirit.

3

Measure and pour

Pour 2.5 oz of Ketel One vodka (for a vodka martini) or 2.5 oz of Tanqueray gin (for a gin martini) into the mixing glass. Add 0.5 oz of dry vermouth.

4

Stir (preferred) or shake

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) to achieve proper chilling and light dilution. If you or your guest prefer a shaken martini, shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds instead.

5

Prepare garnish

If using a lemon twist: run a vegetable peeler or paring knife to remove a 1/2-inch wide strip of peel, avoiding pith. If using an olive: have one green olive ready on a cocktail pick.

6

Strain and serve

Discard ice or water from the chilled glass. Using a julep strainer or the shaker's built-in strainer, strain the martini into the chilled glass.

7

Finish garnish

If using a lemon twist: hold the twist over the drink and give it a quick squeeze to express oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it in or place on the rim. If using an olive: skewer the olive and place it in the drink.
