Preparation
- 1
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with large ice to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
- 2
Prepare a large ice cube if you don't already have one. Use an insulated mold for a slow-melting cube.
Build & Stir
- 3
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and 1/4 tsp simple syrup.
- 4
Strain & Finish
- 5
Strain into glass
Discard the chilling ice from the rocks glass if used. Place one large ice cube in the chilled rocks glass and strain the stirred cocktail over the cube using a julep strainer.
- 6
Float aged rum
Slowly pour 1/4 oz aged rum over the back of a bar spoon onto the surface of the drink to create a delicate float with a subtle aged rum aroma.
- 7
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange peel: hold the peel about 6 inches above the glass, skin side toward the drink, and give it a firm snap to release the oils. Optionally flame the peel by holding a lit match near the peel and squeezing once quickly, directing the flame toward the oils (exercise caution). Run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the cocktail. Optionally add a Luxardo cherry on a pick.
Serve
- 8
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the spirit-forward balance of rye and vermouth with the rum float and bitters accenting the finish.
