Averna Recipe

Cocktail

   Build and stir

   If you are using bourbon or dark rum, add 2 oz Averna and 1 oz bourbon (or dark rum) into a mixing glass. If making a spirit-forward Averna neat, add 2 oz Averna alone. Add 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

   Chill and dilute

   Fill the mixing glass with large ice or regular ice, then stir briskly for 20–30 seconds (or until the outside of the glass is nicely chilled and slightly frosted) to properly chill and dilute the drink.

   Strain

   Strain the mixture into an old-fashioned glass over a single large ice cube, or into a chilled coupe if you prefer it up.

   Garnish

   Express the oils from an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray over the drink. Rub the rim with the peel, then drop it into the glass as garnish.

   Serve immediately.
