Soda Base & Mixers
Cream & Dairy
Sweeteners & Syrups
Citrus & Garnish
Optional Boosts (for variations)
Method
Prepare Glass & Ice
Chill a tall glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice to cool it down, then discard that ice and add 1 cup of crushed ice to the glass for serving.
If using a mint garnish, slap the mint between your palms once to release aroma and set aside.
Build the Classic Dirty Soda
Add syrups and citrus
Into the glass with crushed ice add 1 teaspoon vanilla syrup, 1 teaspoon simple syrup, 1 teaspoon grenadine (optional for color) and 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice. These provide the sweet, fruity and tangy backbone of the dirty soda.
Pour sodas
Slowly pour 2 cups chilled cola over the ice and syrups. Follow with 1 cup chilled sparkling water or club soda for effervescence and 1 cup chilled lemon-lime soda (or cream soda for a sweeter version). Pour gently to preserve carbonation and create layered look.
Add cream
Drizzle 1 tablespoon half-and-half over the top. The dairy will sink through and create the characteristic cloudy 'dirty' effect as it mixes.
Optional float
If you want a float-style dirty soda, add 2 small scoops of vanilla ice cream on top instead of (or in addition to) the half-and-half. This will make the drink richer and creamier.
Stir gently with a long spoon 2–3 times to incorporate syrups and a little of the cream without fully eliminating the layered visual. Taste and add additional simple syrup (½ tsp increments) if you prefer sweeter.
Variations & Add-Ins
Coffee Dirty Soda
For a coffee-forward dirty soda, replace 1 ounce of the cola (or use in addition) with 1 ounce cold-brew or chilled espresso. Add the vanilla syrup and half-and-half as above; the coffee adds a roasted note that pairs well with vanilla and cream.
Citrus Bright Dirty Soda
Increase fresh lime juice to 2 teaspoons and add a lime wedge as garnish. You can also add a splash (½ tsp) of orange or grapefruit juice for extra brightness.
Garnish & Serve
Garnish with the lime wedge on the rim and the mint sprig tucked into the top (if using). Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon so the drinker can mix to preference.
Leftovers: Dirty soda is best fresh. If you must prepare ahead, keep sodas chilled and combine just before serving to preserve carbonation and cream separation.
