Method

To Make the Chocolate Cake

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, combine the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth; the batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

To Make the Chocolate Ganache

  1. 8

    Heat the Cream

In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the heavy cream to a simmer. Do not let it boil.

  2. 9

    Combine with Chocolate

Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 5 minutes to soften.

  3. 10

    Stir to Combine

After 5 minutes, add the unsalted butter to the bowl and stir gently until the chocolate is melted and the ganache is smooth and glossy.

  4. 11

    Cool the Ganache

Allow the ganache to cool at room temperature until it thickens slightly, about 30 minutes.

To Assemble the Cake

  1. 12

    Layer the Cakes

Place one layer of the chocolate cake on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache over the top.

  2. 13

    Top with Second Layer

Carefully place the second layer of cake on top of the ganache-covered layer.

  3. 14

    Frost the Cake

Pour the remaining ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.

  4. 15

    Serve

Slice the cake and serve at room temperature. Enjoy your double chocolate ganache cake!
