Method
Muddle & Build
- 1
Prepare fruit and herb
Place the hulled and quartered strawberries and 4 of the Thai basil leaves into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass.
- 2
Using a muddler, gently but firmly muddle the strawberries and basil together 6–8 times until the strawberries are broken down and aromatic juices are released. Avoid pulverizing the basil into tiny bits — press to release oils.
- 3
Add the vodka, fresh lemon juice and rhubarb essence to the muddled mixture. If you prefer a slightly sweeter cocktail, add the optional simple syrup or agave now.
Shake & Chill
- 4
Fill the shaker with a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted.
Strain & Serve
- 5
Fill a short rocks glass with crushed ice or a large ice cube. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the glass through a fine mesh strainer (to remove seeds and herb bits) while holding back the muddled solids in the shaker.
- 6
Garnish with a thin strawberry slice on the rim and a small sprig of Thai basil placed gently on the ice to release aroma as you sip.
- 7
Serve immediately. Optionally, express an additional basil leaf over the drink (clap between your palms) to release aromatic oils before adding as garnish.
