Method
Coffee Base
Measure and grind
Measure 0.083 cups (approximately 14–15 g) of decaffeinated whole coffee beans. Grind to a medium-coarse consistency if using a pour‑over or French press; grind a touch finer for drip machines. Aim for a consistency similar to coarse sand.
Heat water
Bring 1 cup (240 ml) of water to 200°F (just off boil). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a full boil then let sit 30 seconds.
Pre‑wet filter (if using pour‑over/drip)
If using a paper filter, place it in the dripper and rinse with about 0.25 cups (60 ml) of hot filtered water to remove papery flavors and preheat the vessel. Discard rinse water.
Bloom
Place the ground coffee in your brewing device (pour‑over, drip basket or French press). Pour 0.06 cups (15 ml) of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them and let bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped gases and improves extraction.
Brew
Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the grounds in a steady spiral (for pour‑over) or add all remaining water and let steep (for French press). Total brew time should be about 3 to 4 minutes for pour‑over/drip and 4 minutes for French press. If using a drip machine, follow the machine’s cycle.
Finish
If using a French press, press down the plunger slowly after 4 minutes and decant the coffee immediately to prevent over-extraction. Serve the brewed decaf coffee in a warmed cup.
Optional Additions
Sweeten to taste with 1 tsp simple syrup or other sweetener. Add 0.25 tsp vanilla extract for a subtle vanilla note.
For spice: sprinkle up to 1 tsp ground cinnamon into the cup or mix into milk before heating.
Stir gently and taste. Adjust milk, sweetener, or spices to preference.
