Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prep bread and spread

If toasting, spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Toast bread butter-side-down in skillet until golden (about 1–2 minutes). If not toasting, leave bread at room temperature. On the non-toasted side of one slice, spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise evenly; on the other slice spread 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard.

  2. 2

    Assemble turkey and cheese

Place the 2 slices of cheddar cheese on the mayonnaise-spread slice. Arrange approximately 6 oz sliced deli turkey on top of the cheese, fanning the slices so they cover the bread evenly.

  3. 3

    Add produce and season

Top the turkey with the lettuce leaf (tear to fit if needed) and 2 tomato slices. Sprinkle the tomato lightly with 1/8 teaspoon of the salt and a pinch of the black pepper (reserve the rest of the salt for other uses). If using optional add-ins (avocado, pickles, red onion, hot sauce), layer them now.

  4. 4

    Finish sandwich

Place the mustard-spread bread slice on top, mustard side down. Press gently to compress the sandwich slightly. If you prefer the cheese melted, return the assembled sandwich to the warm skillet, cover with a lid, and heat 1–2 minutes until cheese softens.

  5. 5

    Slice and serve

Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle. Serve immediately with chips, a pickle, or a side salad.

Optional add-ins

  1. 6

Avocado: mash or layer 1/2 cup sliced avocado on top of the turkey; sprinkle lightly with remaining 7/8 teaspoon salt and a pinch of pepper. Pickles and onion: layer pickles and thin red onion slices between the turkey and lettuce so flavors distribute evenly. Hot sauce: drizzle 1 teaspoon across turkey before adding tomato if you want heat.
