Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

If you prefer a toasted sandwich, spread about 1 tsp of softened butter evenly on the outer sides of both bread slices. If not toasting, leave butter out and proceed to step 2.

  2. 2

    Toast (optional)

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place bread slices butter-side-down on the skillet and toast 1–2 minutes per side, or until golden and slightly crisp. Remove and set aside. Alternatively, use a toaster for plain toasting without butter.

  3. 3

    Mix condiments

On the non-toasted side of one bread slice, spread 1 tbs mayonnaise evenly. On the other bread slice, spread 1 tsp mustard. These form the flavor base and help keep the sandwich moist.

  4. 4

    Assemble meats and cheese

On the mayo-spread slice, layer the sliced ham (2 oz) evenly, then the sliced turkey (2 oz) on top of the ham. Place the slice of cheese on top of the turkey so it can slightly soften from any remaining heat if toasted.

  5. 5

    Add produce and season

Top the cheese with the lettuce leaf, then the tomato slices (2) and pickle slices if using. Sprinkle the tomato with about 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper to enhance flavor.

  6. 6

    Close and press

Place the mustard-spread bread slice mustard-side-down on top of the layered ingredients to close the sandwich. Press gently to compact the fillings for a better bite.

  7. 7

    Slice and serve

Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle. Serve immediately. If packing for later, wrap tightly in parchment or plastic wrap to keep it together and reduce air exposure.
