Sandwich Stack

Method

Prepare Ingredients

  1. 1

    Wash and slice

Rinse the tomato and lettuce under cold water. Pat dry with a towel. Slice the tomato into four 1/4-inch thick slices. Tear or trim lettuce to fit the bread if needed.

  2. 2

If your cheddar comes as a block, slice two even pieces sized to fit the bread. Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean work surface.

Assemble Spreads

  1. 3

In a small bowl combine mayonnaise and yellow mustard. Stir until smooth. Season the tomato slices lightly with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper to bring out flavor.

  2. 4

Spread approximately 1 tablespoon of the mayonnaise-mustard mixture onto one side of each slice of bread (reserve about 1 teaspoon of spread if you prefer lighter).

Build Sandwiches

  1. 5

Place 2 slices of bread (spread side up) as the bottom of each sandwich. On each bottom slice, layer 4 slices of deli ham evenly to cover the bread.

  2. 6

Top the ham with one slice of cheddar cheese on each sandwich. Add two tomato slices per sandwich (total 4 slices used across both sandwiches) on top of the cheese.

  3. 7

Add one lettuce leaf on top of the tomato, and optionally place 2 pickle slices on each sandwich. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper over the tomato and lettuce if desired.

  4. 8

Close each sandwich with the remaining bread slices, spread side down.

Toast (Optional) & Serve

  1. 9

If you prefer a toasted sandwich, spread 1 teaspoon of softened butter on the outside of each top and bottom bread slice. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and place each sandwich in the pan. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is slightly melted.

  2. 10

Remove sandwiches from the skillet, let rest 1 minute, then cut each sandwich in half diagonally. Serve immediately.
