Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare produce

Wash and dry the lettuce leaf. Slice the tomato into two even slices (about 1/4-inch thick). Separate three rings of red onion. Place tomato slices on a paper towel and gently pat to remove excess moisture; season the tomato slices lightly with 1/8 tsp black pepper and 1/8 tsp salt.

  2. 2

    Toast bread (optional)

If you prefer a toasted sandwich, heat a skillet over medium heat. Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with the unsalted butter (about 1 tsp total, spread evenly). Place bread slices butter-side-down in the skillet and toast 1–2 minutes until golden, then flip and toast the other side 30–60 seconds to warm through. Remove from heat.

  3. 3

    Assemble spreads

On one slice of bread (untoasted side if you toasted), spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise evenly. On the other slice, spread 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard evenly.

  4. 4

    Layer sandwich

Place the 6 oz turkey evenly on the mayo-coated slice, arranging the slices so they cover the bread without large gaps. Top the turkey with the cheddar slice. Add the seasoned tomato slices on top of the cheese, then add the red onion rings and the lettuce leaf. If using pickles, place 2 pickle slices on top of the lettuce.

  5. 5

    Finish and serve

Sprinkle remaining 1/8 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper over the tomato and lettuce if desired. Place the mustard-coated bread slice on top, mustard-side-down. Press gently to compact the sandwich slightly. Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle. Serve immediately.
