Spicy BBQ Sauce

Method

Spicy BBQ Sauce

1

Combine ingredients

Measure and add ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, smoked paprika, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper into a medium saucepan or small pot.

2

Add liquid

Add 2 tablespoons of water to thin slightly and stir to combine all dry ingredients into the ketchup base.

3

Simmer

Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Once simmering, reduce heat to low and let simmer, uncovered, 8–12 minutes until slightly thickened and flavors meld. Stir every 1–2 minutes.

4

Adjust seasoning & finish

Taste and adjust heat or sweetness as needed: add more hot sauce or red pepper flakes for spice, or 1 teaspoon more brown sugar or molasses for sweetness. If desired, whisk in 1 teaspoon olive oil off heat for a glossy finish. Let the sauce cool 5 minutes before using or storing.

5

Blend for smoothness (optional)

For an ultra-smooth sauce, transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender and puree briefly until smooth. Be careful with hot liquids; allow to cool slightly and vent the blender lid.

6

Store

Transfer to a clean jar. Refrigerate up to 10–14 days. Reheat gently before using if desired.

For Serving / Application

7

Use the Spicy BBQ sauce as a finishing glaze: brush onto cooked chicken, pork, beef or vegetables during the last 3–5 minutes of grilling or broiling so it caramelizes but does not burn.

8

Toss 1/2–3/4 cup sauce with about 4 cups of shredded or sliced cooked protein/vegetables to coat evenly for sandwiches, tacos, or bowls.

9

Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley and serve with lime wedges for brightness.
