Tea Base

Method

Tea Base

1

Bring water to a boil

Pour 1 liter water into a kettle or saucepan and heat until it comes to a rolling boil.

2

Steep the tea

Place 4 black tea bags (or equivalent loose tea in an infuser) into a heatproof pitcher. Pour the boiling water over the tea. Let steep for 4–5 minutes for a balanced-strength unsweet iced tea (steep up to 6 minutes for stronger flavor; avoid longer to prevent excessive bitterness).

3

Remove tea bags

After steeping, remove and discard the tea bags or strain out loose leaves to stop extraction.

Cooling & Serving

4

Cool to room temperature

Allow the brewed tea to cool at room temperature for 15–20 minutes to avoid melting too much ice and diluting the final drink.

5

Dilute and chill

Add 1 liter cold water to the cooled concentrate in the pitcher and stir to combine. Taste and adjust: if too strong, add additional cold water as desired.

6

Refrigerate

Place the pitcher in the refrigerator and chill for at least 30 minutes, or until cold.

7

Serve

Fill glasses with ice (about 1/2 to 1 cup ice per 12-16 oz glass). Pour the chilled unsweet iced tea over ice. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice and/or a mint sprig if desired. Serve immediately.
