Cocktail

Method

Prepare glass

  1. 1

    Optional salt rim

If using a salt or tajín rim, rub a grapefruit wedge around the edge of a rocks glass, then dip the rim into a small plate of coarse salt or tajín to coat lightly. Set the glass aside.

  2. 2

Add 3 ice cubes to the prepared rocks glass and set aside to chill while you mix the cocktail.

Mix cocktail

  1. 3

Fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 1 cup).

  2. 4

Add 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.5 oz blanco rum, 0.5 oz elderflower liqueur, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 2 dashes of orange bitters to the shaker.

  3. 5

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the exterior of the shaker feels very cold and slightly frosted (this chills and dilutes the drink appropriately).

  4. 6

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or the shaker's strainer into the prepared rocks glass over fresh ice (use the 3 cubes placed earlier).

Finish & serve

  1. 7

Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the glass by holding the twist skin-side down above the drink and giving it a quick pinch to release aromatic oils, then drop the twist into the drink (or hang a thin wheel on the rim).

  2. 8

Serve immediately and enjoy. Tasting note: bright citrus and floral notes from elderflower balance the earthy warmth of reposado; adjust agave if you prefer sweeter or drier.
