Method

Equipment & Setup

1

Chill and prepare equipment

Chill serving glasses or cups in a refrigerator or with ice. Ensure carbonated water is well chilled. Have measuring tools, a tall spoon or stirrer, and a clean funnel or spout-ready dispenser available.

2

If using a fountain dispenser, verify lines are flushed and syrup ports are labeled. For manual mixing, use a clean pitcher for each flavor to mix syrup with carbonated water just before serving.

Standard Large Fountain Drink (Yield: 1 large serving)

3

Measure syrup

For one large serving (approximately 16 fl oz / 8 cups total liquid before ice dilution in this recipe), measure 2 tablespoons (0.5 cup totals of syrup options represent multiple servings; use 2 tbsp [approximately 1 fl oz / 30 ml] of chosen syrup per serving). For clarity: use 2 tbsp cola syrup for a cola, 2 tbsp lemon-lime syrup for a lemon-lime soda, 2 tbsp orange syrup for orange, or 2 tbsp root beer syrup for root beer.

4

Add ice

Fill the chilled large cup about two-thirds full with cubed ice (roughly 1.5 to 2 cups of ice depending on cup size).

5

Add syrup

Pour the measured 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) of chosen syrup over the ice into the cup.

6

Top with carbonated water

Slowly pour about 12 fl oz (1.5 cups) of chilled carbonated water over the ice and syrup, filling the cup to about 90% capacity. Pour gently to preserve carbonation.

7

Stir gently

Use a long spoon or straw to gently stir 6–8 rotations to mix syrup with carbonated water without causing excessive foaming.

8

Garnish and serve

Garnish according to flavor: for lemon-lime or cola, add a lemon or lime wedge; for cherry or cola variations, add a maraschino cherry and optionally 1 tsp cherry or vanilla syrup. Serve immediately with straw.

Mixing Multiple Flavors (Float & Splash Options)

9

To create a float or splash, after filling the base soda as above, add 1 tsp of optional syrup (grenadine, cherry, or vanilla) slowly along the side of the cup so it creates a colored layer or swirl. For a creamier float, add a small scoop of vanilla soft-serve or 1 tbsp cream (not included in main ingredients).

10

To make a half-and-half (e.g., cola and lemon-lime), pour half the measured syrup of each flavor (1 tbsp each) into the cup, then top with carbonated water and stir gently.

Batch Preparation (For multiple large servings)

11

For a small batch of four large servings: combine 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) of a single syrup with 6 cups chilled carbonated water in a chilled pitcher. Stir gently to combine and immediately dispense into glasses filled with ice.

12

If using a commercial fountain dispenser, follow manufacturer's mix ratios (often pre-set) and ensure syrup-to-water ratio equals approximately 1:16 by volume for standard strength; adjust to taste.

Cleanup & Storage

13

Rinse measuring utensils, spoons, and pitchers with cold water. If using syrup concentrates, store opened syrups refrigerated or sealed per manufacturer instructions. Flush dispenser lines per equipment guidelines to prevent syrup buildup.
