Method
Brewed Coffee
Measure and grind
Measure 2 tablespoons of whole coffee beans per 12 oz of water. Grind to a medium consistency (similar to granulated sugar) if using whole beans. If using pre-ground coffee, use 2 tablespoons.
Heat water
Heat 12 oz (about 355 ml) of filtered water to just off boil, approximately 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.
Add coffee to brewer
Place the ground coffee in your chosen brewing device (drip coffee maker basket, pour-over cone with filter, French press, or AeroPress). Level the grounds for even extraction.
Bloom (pour-over / manual methods)
If using pour-over or AeroPress, pour about twice the weight of coffee in hot water (≈40 ml) over the grounds to saturate them and let sit 30–45 seconds to release trapped gases. This step can be skipped with automatic drip but improves flavor with manual methods.
Brew
Pour the remaining hot water over the grounds slowly (for pour-over/AeroPress) or start the brew cycle on the drip machine. For a French press, pour all water, stir gently, place the lid and steep for 4 minutes before pressing. Total contact/brew time should be about 3–4 minutes for pour-over/AeroPress and 4 minutes for French press.
Serve
Once brewed, transfer the coffee to a cup immediately to avoid over-extraction or bitterness from sitting on heated plates.
