Method

Tea base

1

Bring water to a boil

Pour 4 cups of fresh cold water into a kettle or saucepan. Heat over high heat until the water reaches a rolling boil.

2

Steep tea

Place 2 black tea bags into a teapot or heatproof container. Pour the boiling water over the tea bags. Cover and let steep for 3–5 minutes depending on desired strength (3 minutes for light, 5 minutes for strong).

3

Remove tea bags

After steeping, remove and discard the tea bags, pressing gently with a spoon if you want slightly stronger flavor.

Optional additions

4

Sweeten

If desired, stir in 1–2 teaspoons of honey or sugar while the tea is hot so it dissolves completely. Adjust to taste.

5

Add milk

If you prefer milk tea, pour in about 1 tablespoon of milk per cup (start with 1 tbsp for 4 cups total and adjust) and stir to combine. Add milk only after sweetening if using sugar or honey.

6

Citrus or mint finish

For a bright finish, add 1–2 lemon slices to the pot or individual cups (do not add lemon if you've added milk, it may curdle). Alternatively, bruise a few fresh mint leaves between your fingers and add to the tea.

7

Serve

Ladle or pour the hot tea into cups. Offer additional sweetener, milk, lemon, or mint at the table so each guest can adjust their cup.
