Coffee Base

Method

Coffee Base

1

Measure beans and water

Weigh 36 grams (0.036 kg) of whole coffee beans for a 12 fl oz (approximately 350 ml) cup. Measure 12 fl oz (about 350 ml) of filtered water. Ratio used: ~1:15 (coffee to water by weight). Adjust to taste if you prefer stronger or weaker coffee.

2

Grind beans

Grind the beans to a consistency appropriate for your brewing method: coarse for French press, medium-coarse for drip/pour-over, medium-fine for Aeropress. Grind immediately before brewing for best aroma.

3

Heat water

Heat the filtered water in a kettle to 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you do not have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

4

Bloom (for pour-over/French press/pourover methods)

If using pour-over or drip: place the ground coffee in the brewer and pour a small amount (about twice the weight of the grounds; ~72 g water) to saturate the grounds. Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds to release gases. If using French press: pour in the hot water and stir gently after adding all water.

5

Brew

Continue pouring the remaining water in a steady, controlled manner for pour-over (total brew time ~2.5–3.5 minutes). For drip machines, start the brew cycle (follow machine’s guidelines). For French press, after adding all water, place the plunger assembly on top and steep for 4 minutes, then press slowly. Adjust brewing time for taste.

6

Serve

Immediately pour the brewed coffee into a pre-warmed mug to preserve temperature and aroma. Taste and adjust with optional add-ins as desired.

Optional Add-ins

7

Heat and froth milk (optional)

If using milk, gently steam or heat 2 fl oz (60 ml) of milk to 150–155°F (65–68°C). Froth with a milk frother or whisk until microfoam forms. Pour over brewed coffee for a latte-style drink.

8

Sweeten and flavor

Stir in 1 tsp granulated sugar or 1 tsp simple syrup to taste. For added flavor, stir in 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or a pinch (1/4 tsp) ground cinnamon. Adjust quantities to preference.

9

Garnish (optional)

Sprinkle a light dusting of cinnamon or cocoa on top of frothed milk, or add a small twist of citrus peel for an aromatic accent.

Equipment

10

Use the listed equipment as needed: a grinder for fresh grinding, kettle to heat water, scale to measure coffee and water, and your chosen brewer (drip machine, French press, or pour-over setup). Clean equipment before and after use for best results.
