Fried Oysters
Method
Fried Oysters
- 1
Prepare the Oysters
Begin by rinsing the fresh oysters under cold water. Carefully shuck the oysters, discarding the top shell, and place them in a bowl. Set aside.
- 2
Make the Breading
In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to ensure even distribution of the spices.
- 3
Coat the Oysters
Pour the buttermilk into another shallow dish. Dip each shucked oyster into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, dredge the oyster in the flour mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). To test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small amount of the flour mixture into the oil; it should bubble vigorously.
- 5
Fry the Oysters
Carefully place the coated oysters in the hot oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the oysters and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- 6
Serve
Serve the fried oysters hot, garnished with lemon wedges for squeezing over the top. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce if desired.
