Stovetop White Rice
Optional Finishing
Method
Stovetop White Rice
- 1
Rinse the rice
Place 1 cup long-grain white rice in a fine-mesh sieve or bowl. Rinse under cold running water, stirring with your hand, until the water runs mostly clear (about 30–60 seconds). Drain thoroughly. Rinsing removes excess surface starch and helps grains remain separate.
- 2
Measure and combine
In a small saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, combine the rinsed rice, 1.5 cups water, and 1 teaspoon salt. If using, add 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or oil. Stir once to distribute the rice evenly.
- 3
Bring to a simmer
Place the pan over medium-high heat and bring to a gentle boil. When you see small bubbles and steam, reduce the heat to low immediately so the liquid is just simmering and the rice is not boiling vigorously.
- 4
Cover and cook
Cover the pan and simmer on the lowest heat setting for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. Do not stir during this time; steam is what finishes cooking the rice.
- 5
Rest the rice
After 15 minutes, remove the pan from heat but keep it covered. Let the rice rest undisturbed for 5–10 minutes to finish steaming and to firm up the grains.
- 6
Fluff and serve
Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
