Method
Brew Tea
Boil water
Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in a small saucepan or kettle.
Steep tea
Add 2 tablespoons of black tea leaves (or 2 strong black tea bags) to the boiling water. Remove from heat, cover, and steep for 4–6 minutes depending on desired strength (4 minutes for medium, 6 for strong).
Strain
Strain the tea leaves (or remove tea bags) into a heatproof container. Reserve about 1 1/4 cups of brewed tea for the recipe; if you brewed extra, set aside or refrigerate.
Finish & Serve (Hot or Iced)
Sweeten and combine
Pour the reserved hot tea back into the saucepan on low heat. Stir in 2 teaspoons granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk (if using) until dissolved. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon ground cardamom if using; stir to combine.
