Dough & Crust

Method

Dough & Crust

1

Preheat and prepare dough

Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while preheating. Lightly flour a clean work surface with the all-purpose flour. Remove the ready-made pizza dough from its packaging and let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes if cold so it becomes easier to stretch.

2

Shape the crust

On the floured surface, press and gently stretch the dough with your hands or roll with a rolling pin to a 9–10 inch round (or desired kid-size shape) about 1/4 inch thick. Transfer the shaped dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet or a lightly oiled pizza pan. If you like a slightly crisp edge, fold a small rim around the edge and press to seal. Brush the rim lightly with 1 tsp olive oil to help browning.

Sauce

3

In a small bowl, stir together the tomato pizza sauce, dried oregano, and garlic powder until combined. Taste and adjust (for kids you generally keep it mild). Using the back of a spoon, spread the sauce evenly over the stretched dough, leaving the outer 1/2 inch rim uncovered. Use about 3 tablespoons of sauce to avoid a soggy crust.

Cheese & Topping

4

Evenly sprinkle 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella over the sauced dough, covering most of the surface. If using, sprinkle 1/2 cup grated mild cheddar for extra flavor and then a light dusting of 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan. Avoid piling cheese too thickly near the edge so cheese doesn't run off during baking.

5

If you want to make kid-friendly designs (optional), use small rounds of cheese or arrange shredded cheese to create smiley faces or simple shapes before baking.

Baking

6

Bake the pizza in the preheated oven on the middle rack (or on the heated pizza stone) for 8–12 minutes. Baking time depends on oven and thickness: check after 8 minutes. Look for a golden-brown crust and bubbly, lightly browned cheese. If the crust is browning too quickly, move the pizza to a higher rack or reduce temperature to 450°F (230°C) and continue baking until cheese is melted and crust is cooked through.

7

Remove the pizza from the oven using oven mitts and slide it onto a cutting board. Let rest for 2–3 minutes to allow cheese to set slightly (easier and safer for kids to eat).

Finishing & Serving

8

If using, sprinkle 1 tsp dried basil or chiffonade fresh basil leaves over the hot pizza. Skip red pepper flakes for younger kids; if using, sprinkle lightly to taste. Cut the pizza into 6–8 kid-size slices using a pizza cutter or sharp knife. Serve warm.

9

Store any leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 6–8 minutes or in a toaster oven until warmed through to preserve crispness.
