Method

Prepare Espresso & Glassware

1

Chill serving glass (optional)

If desired, place the serving glass or small bowl in the freezer for 5–10 minutes to slightly chill; this helps slow melting.

2

Pull a fresh double or lungo espresso (about 60 ml). If you prefer less intensity, prepare a single espresso (30 ml). Brew immediately before serving so it is hot when poured over the gelato.

3

If you like your espresso sweetened, stir 1 teaspoon granulated sugar into the hot espresso until dissolved.

Assemble Affogato

4

Place 2 generous scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into the chilled serving glass or bowl.

5

Pour the chosen cordial (30 ml) evenly over the gelato. Use only one cordial option per serving.

6

Immediately pour the hot espresso (about 60 ml) directly over the gelato and cordial. Pour steadily so the espresso both soaks into and pools around the gelato, creating contrast between hot and cold.

7

Wait 10–15 seconds to allow a little melting, then, if using, sprinkle 1 teaspoon dark chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder over the top and/or 1 tablespoon toasted chopped nuts.

8

Serve immediately with a long spoon. To enjoy, sip the espresso, eat the gelato, and allow the cordial to flavor each bite.
