Burger Patties & Seasoning
- 1
Form and season the patty
Gently shape the 1/2 lb ground beef into a single round patty about 3/4–1 inch thick. Do not overwork the meat — handle just enough to form a cohesive patty. Create a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to reduce doming during cooking. Season both sides evenly with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- 2
Preheat pan or grill
Heat a cast-iron skillet or grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F / hot). If using a skillet, add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and let it shimmer but not smoke.
Bacon & Cheese

Cook the burger and melt cheese
Place the seasoned patty on the hot skillet or grill. Cook undisturbed for 3¾–4½ minutes for medium (adjust time slightly for desired doneness). Flip the patty and immediately place the American cheese slice on top. Cook another 3–4 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 160°F for a well-done 1/2 lb patty, or 145–155°F for medium (adjust to preference). During the last minute, stack the cooked bacon on top of the melting cheese so it warms and adheres.
Bun & Assembly
- 5
Toast the bun and prepare spread
While the burger finishes, split the bun and spread 1 teaspoon softened butter on the cut sides. Toast the buns buttered-side down in a dry skillet or on the grill until golden, about 1–2 minutes. Spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise on the bottom bun (or top, per preference).
- 6
Assemble the burger
Place the mayo-spread bottom bun on a plate. Lay the lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, then the tomato slices and a few onion rings. Set the hot bacon-and-cheese-topped patty on the vegetables. Add the dill pickle spear on the side or tucked along the burger. Cover with the top bun.
