Mojito Base

Method

Mojito Base

  1. 1

    Muddle

In a sturdy Collins glass or mixing glass, place the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup. Gently clap the mint between your palms once to release aromatics, then add leaves to the glass. Using a muddler, press and twist the mint with the syrup 6–8 times — enough to bruise leaves and release oils but not shred them.

  2. 2

    Add citrus and spirit

Pour in the fresh lime juice and Bacardi white rum. Stir the mixture briefly (4–6 revolutions) to combine and dissolve remaining syrup.

  3. 3

    Build with ice and soda

Fill the glass with crushed ice up to the top (about 1 cup). Top with soda water (about 2.5 oz). Use a long spoon to gently lift and fold the drink once or twice so mint, lime, rum and soda mingle while preserving carbonation.

Garnish & Finish (themed)

  1. 4

    Add the 'blood' flourish

Carefully drop the grenadine into the center of the drink. Because grenadine is heavier than the mojito mixture it will sink slightly and create a dramatic red streak — the 'blood' accent. If desired, add two dashes of Angostura bitters on top for extra aromatic depth.

  2. 5

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with a lime wheel on the rim and a fresh mint sprig (slap the sprig once between your hands to wake the oils before placing). Serve immediately with a straw and a warning to your victims.
