Preparation

If using nuts, toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Remove and let cool, then chop coarsely if not already chopped.
- 3
If your sauces are refrigerated and thick, warm them briefly: microwave each sauce in a microwave-safe bowl for 10–15 seconds or place in a small saucepan over low heat for 30–60 seconds, stirring until pourable. Do not overheat.
Assembling the Sundae
- 4
Layer the base scoops
Remove the chilled serving glass from the freezer. Place 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream into the bottom of the glass. Add 1 scoop of chocolate ice cream. Top with the remaining 2 scoops of vanilla and the single scoop of strawberry toward the top so you have three vanilla, two chocolate, and one strawberry arranged attractively.
- 5
Add sauces
Drizzle 1 tablespoon of hot fudge evenly over the scoops, then drizzle 1 tablespoon of caramel and 1 tablespoon of strawberry sauce so the sauces cascade down the sides of some scoops for visual appeal.
- 6
Add texture
Sprinkle the chopped toasted nuts (2 tbs) and mini chocolate chips (1 tbs) over the sauces and ice cream, allowing some to fall into the crevices. If using crushed cookie crumbs, sprinkle them now (2 tbs).
- 7
Whipped cream and finishing touches
Pipe or spoon 3/4 cup of whipped cream over the top of the ice cream to form a generous cloud. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of rainbow sprinkles across the whipped cream. Place the fresh strawberry halves and 2 maraschino cherries on top, tucking one cherry into the whipped cream peak and arranging strawberries around it. Add the wafer or thin cookie by inserting it at a slight angle into the whipped cream.
- 8
If serving affogato-style, pour 30 ml of hot espresso or strong coffee over the assembled sundae immediately before serving so the hot coffee melts the ice cream slightly in ribbons.
- 9
Serve immediately with a long spoon and napkins. Provide extra sauces, nuts, and cherries on the side if desired.
