Bread & Finishing
Method
Steak
Add 2 tbs olive oil, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper and red pepper flakes (if using) to the steak. Toss to coat and marinate at room temperature for 10–15 minutes (or refrigerate up to 1 hour).
Heat a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the marinated steak in a single layer (work in batches if needed) and sear 1–2 minutes per side until browned and just cooked through. Remove steak to a plate and tent with foil.
Onions & Peppers
Assemble & Melt (Pizza Topping)
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) with a rack in the upper third for broiling/melting. Split the hoagie rolls and spread about 1/2 tbs softened butter on the cut sides of each roll.
Place rolls cut-side up on a baking sheet and toast in the oven 4–6 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven.
Top each sandwich with a layer of shredded mozzarella (about 1/2 cup per sandwich) and pieces/slices of provolone. Sprinkle evenly with grated Parmesan and 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning across all sandwiches.
Return the baking sheet to the oven and broil or bake on high 2–4 minutes until cheeses are melted and bubbly and edges are golden. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
Finish & Serve
Optional: sprinkle chopped fresh basil or parsley over the melted cheese. Close each sandwich and press lightly. Cut in half and serve hot with extra pizza sauce or pickled peppers on the side.
