Hot Dog

Seasonings & Condiments (optional, adjust to taste)

Method

Hot Dog

1

Choose a cooking method

Decide whether to simmer, pan-fry, or grill the 4 oz hot dog. Simmering is gentle and prevents splitting; pan-frying gives browning; grilling gives smoky char. All three produce a safe, hot internal temperature for a precooked or raw 4 oz hot dog.

2

Place 1 cup water into a small saucepan and bring to a low simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low so water barely moves. Add the 4 oz hot dog and simmer gently for 4–5 minutes, turning once halfway through, until heated through and slightly plump. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towel.

3

Pan-fry (for browning)

Heat a small nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat and add 1 cup oil OR a light coating (about 1 tsp) if preferred. When oil is shimmering, add the hot dog. Cook 2–3 minutes per side, rolling to brown evenly, until nicely caramelized and heated through. Remove and drain on paper towel.

4

Grill (for smoky char)

Preheat grill to medium (about 350–400°F / 175–200°C). Place hot dog perpendicular to grates and grill 2–3 minutes per side, turning to get even char marks, until heated through and slightly crisp at the edges. Remove from grill.

5

Prepare the bun

While the hot dog finishes cooking, spread 1 tsp butter or brush 1 tsp oil inside the bun. Toast in a dry skillet or on the grill for 30–45 seconds per side over medium heat until lightly golden and warmed through. Alternatively, wrap the bun in foil and warm on the grill for 1–2 minutes.

6

Assemble

Place the cooked 4 oz hot dog into the toasted bun. Season with a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of black pepper and 1/4 tsp salt if desired. Add condiments to taste: 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp ketchup, 1 tbsp relish, 1 tbsp diced onion, or 1 tbsp sauerkraut as preferred. Serve immediately.

Seasonings & Condiments

7

Mustard & Ketchup: Spoon 1 tsp each down the length of the hot dog. Adjust amounts to taste.

8

Relish or Pickles: Add 1 tbsp relish or chopped pickles evenly on top for sweetness and crunch.

9

Onions: Sprinkle 1 tbsp diced raw onion over the condiments if you want a sharp bite.

10

Sauerkraut: Drain 1 tbsp sauerkraut well; if desired, warm briefly in a small pan for 30 seconds, then top the hot dog.

11

Final seasoning: Taste and add additional salt or pepper if needed. Serve hot.
