1

Prepare Glass (optional absinthe rinse)

If using an absinthe rinse, pour 1/4 tsp absinthe into a chilled rocks or old-fashioned glass, swirl to coat the inside, then discard excess (or keep a thin coating). Set glass aside.

2

Build and Stir

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with ice, combine 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1/4 oz orange liqueur and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Stir briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted (the mixing glass should frost on the outside).

3

Strain

Strain the chilled mixture into the prepared chilled rocks/old-fashioned glass over a large ice cube (or a couple of regular ice cubes).

4

Garnish

Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface by holding the twist skin-side down above the drink and giving it a quick squeeze, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally, add a Luxardo or brandied cherry.

5

Serve immediately. Enjoy slowly to appreciate the interplay between the finished bourbon's oak/port notes and the sweet vermouth and orange liqueur.
