Prep
- 1
Salt the rim (optional)
Run the lime wedge around the rim of a highball or Collins glass. Pour the coarse salt onto a small plate and gently dip or roll the wet rim through the salt to coat about half to three-quarters of the rim. Tap off any excess salt.

Build the Cocktail
- 3
In a mixing glass or shaker without ice, add 2 oz Patrón Reposado, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Adding bitters: add 2 dashes grapefruit bitters if using.
- 4
Stir the mixture briefly (10–15 seconds) to combine and chill slightly. This step integrates the citrus and sweetener without over-diluting.
- 5
Pour the contents of the mixing glass into the prepared, ice-filled serving glass.
- 6
Top with 3 oz bitter grapefruit soda. Gently stir once or twice with a bar spoon to marry the soda with the spirit mixture — do not over-stir to preserve effervescence.
Finish & Serve
- 7
Garnish with a grapefruit wheel or wedge on the rim. Optionally squeeze the grapefruit wedge over the drink before dropping it in for more aroma.
- 8
Serve immediately with a straw or long spoon.
