Cocktail

For serving (optional)

Method

Prepare cocktail

1

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz blended Scotch (preferably a cask-finished expression), 0.5 oz rye whisky, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, 0.25 oz demerara syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.

2

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large, cold ice cubes. Stir gently but thoroughly for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and properly diluted—aim for approximately 20–25% dilution for balance.

3

Strain

Strain the cocktail through a fine strainer into an old-fashioned glass over a single large ice sphere or big cube (or serve neat in a chilled coupe if preferred).

4

Express and garnish

Take an orange peel and express the oils over the drink by holding it skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the surface and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray across the cocktail. Run the peel around the glass rim, then drop it into the drink as garnish.

5

Serve

Serve immediately. The cask-finished Scotch provides layered oak and finishing-cask notes while the rye and amaro add spice and bittersweet complexity—sip slowly to appreciate the finish.

Make demerara syrup (if needed)

6

Combine 2 parts demerara sugar and 1 part water in a small saucepan (e.g., 1 cup sugar to 1/2 cup water). Warm gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil. Remove from heat, cool, and store refrigerated in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks.
