Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

1

Combine ingredients

Pour 2 oz Canadian Club 100% Rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes aromatic bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (if using) into a mixing glass or shaker.

2

Add simple syrup (optional)

If you prefer a slightly sweeter, softer drink, add 1/4 tsp simple syrup. This is optional; many rye-forward cocktails omit added sugar.

3

Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes and stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted — the liquid should be very cold and slightly viscous.

4

Prepare glass

Strain the mixture through a julep or Hawthorne strainer into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over a single large ice cube (if serving on the rocks) or neat in a chilled coupe.

Garnish & serve

5

Express orange oil

Hold an orange peel over the glass and give it a firm twist, skin-side down, to express the citrus oils onto the surface of the drink. Rub the rim with the peel, then drop it into the glass as a garnish.

6

Add cherry (optional)

If desired, drop a Luxardo or brandied cherry into the glass for a hint of sweetness and visual appeal.

7

Serve immediately while cold. Enjoy slowly to appreciate the rye's spice and the vermouth's sweetness.
